Provinces and Villages of Fiji

With the help of our Fijian friends, we have made a list of all provinces, districts, and villages in Fiji. As you can imagine, this is a considerable number: 15 provinces, 195 districts, and 1,193 villages.

Each province is divided into districts, which can be as few as 4, and as many as 22. These districts vary in size, with village numbers ranging between 19 and 146. For our US visitors, this is the equivalent of states and counties.

Fiji, Our Land and People

For those interested in a local Fijan perspective, the following was written by Suva resident, Simione Davetta. The information on provinces was also supplied by Simione.

The islands enjoy a tropical maritime climate without great extremes of heat or cold. Occasionally traversing the isles are tropical cyclones between November and April yearly. Heavy downpours dominate these months when temperatures can rise to the early 30's Centigrade. In the cooler months between May and October temperatures are in the lower 20's Centigrade.

The total land area is a mere 18,333 square kilometers, with the two major islands - Viti Levu and Vanua Levu - accounting for 87% of the total lands.

Other main islands are Taveuni, Kadavu, Rabi, Vatulele, Beqa, and Qamea. In addition there are several important groups of islands - Rotuma (8 islands), Lau (57), Moala part of the Lau group (3), Lomaiviti (12), Mamanuca (10), and the Yasawa group (20).

We are predominantly Melanesian throughout, and the boldness of early sea rovers yielded a mixture of racial types and cultures, Melanesian and Polynesian, even in the main islands.

Not only are Fijians a happy race of people, our lifestyles show the best traits of Melanesia, Polynesia, India, China and other nationalities that make us unique. There is love of nature in all its aspects as well as fear, imagination, happiness and laughter.

Indigenous Fijians and Rotumans own 88% of the land while the State holds 4% and private freeholds account for about 8%.

The capital Suva is one of the two cities on the main island of Viti Levu, located on the south-eastern end, with Lautoka the other, in the west. While this site refers to Fijians and Rotumans as one, it should be noted that the islands of Rotuma - about 600kms. to the north of us were never conquered, yet were ceded by her chiefs to the British in the hope of quelling internal factional fighting by her peoples in the 1880's as outside influences came to bear.

Indeed, Rotuma is now administered from Suva and is a port of entry into the group. Our peoples have since intermarried and share much good memories together.

Rotuma - the Blessed Isles

Rotuma lies about 640 kilometers to the north of Fiji's capital Suva, 450 km south of Tuvalu, 350 km west of Futuna and over7 00km east of Vanuatu. The archipelago comprises the main island - about 44 square kilometers and 15 km long - and a few smaller islets.

The islands have about 530 families and is served by an airport and shipping links. The province is abundant in agricultural, copra, tourism and marine potential.

The 2007 census recorded a population of about 2,400 on the island with about 10,000 living off the island either in Fiji or abroad.

The blessed isles are surrounded by a fringing coral reef with a maximum width of 1.5 km in the easternmost part of the island. The volcanic soils are usually very fertile, well drained and supports agriculture that focuses on taro, cassava and animal husbandry for meat and eggs.

Yams, taros, cassava, and varying banana cultivars are grown in a rotation system.

The Administration on Rotuma

The administrative center is at Ahau located in Itu'ti'u district. Here, a postal service exists with satellite telecommunications, hospital, school, a two-cell jail police station and the offices of the Island Council (RIC).

The RIC's role is to manage the island, pass and implement regulations and by-laws, address land issues and arbitrate disputes. It answers to the Prime Ministers office and administers a budget of about FJ$250,000.

The RIC has fourteen members with voting rights - 2 each per district comprising a chief and an elected member - and is headed by a chairman.

To take advantage of the abundance of coconut palms efforts are being made to produce fossil fuel alternatives and mitigate the over reliance on imports.

You can contact Rotuma district associations, and help set-up markets for the communities below:
